Thermally expandable graphite (TEG) expands when exposed to heat and is used in many different products, areas and industries because of its excellent flame retardancy, sealability, processability, and other features.
TEG is excellently flame retardant as it thermally expands to form a carbon wall that can block a flame.
Because of its excellent sealability, TEG can prevent liquids and gases from leaking out and prevent foreign substances from entering inside.
TEG is flexible, lightweight and very processable. For example, it can easily be cut.
An experiment showed that TEG can be heated up to between 800 and 1000 °C.

Structurally, TEG is hexagonal tabular crystals of carbon with many carbon layers.
TEG is characteristically easy to peel as the carbon layers are connected by a weak electrical force (van der Waals force), not by strong chemical bonding.
