Sealability

- TEG

Sealability refers to properties that prevent liquids and gases from leaking to the outside of a machine or device or that prevent foreign substances from entering inside.

TEG expands when exposed to heat. It can easily be processed into a sheet form without the use of a binder.
Being 100% carbon, the sheet has excellent heat-resistant, chemical-resistant, and airtight properties and is very sealable.
Because of these features, TEG-based sheets are extensively used in automobiles and chemical plants.

Molded products made from combustible materials such as resins or rubber with TEG added can prevent fire spread as the TEG expands to smother the fire as it starts.
Because of its excellent flameproof properties and sealability, TEG is mainly used in construction.
Usually, TEG is hidden within other materials but exhibits its excellent sealability in the event of an emergency.

With excellent sealability, thermally expandable graphite (TEG) has many different applications.

Feature Feature

Sealability characteristics of TEG

01

Expanding TEG before use

  • By being heated to expand, TEG can easily be compression-molded and processed into a sheet form.
  • TEG can be used within a wide temperature range, from very low to very high temperatures (-200 to 3,200 °C/inert atmosphere).
02

Adding a combustible material to TEG before use

  • If a fire starts, TEG expands to form a char layer. Incorporating TEG into a combustible material to create this layer can prevent fire spread.
  • In contrast to typical halogen fire spread prevention materials, TEG is a non-halogen material that does not emit chlorine or other toxic gases. Its safety and environmental friendliness are excellent.
  • Adding even a small amount of TEG can improve fire spread prevention. This helps control costs.

TEG may be used as a seal component.

seal component

Seal components are parts or materials in a machine or a device that prevent the leakage of liquids and gases to the outside and prevent rainwater, dust and other substances from entering inside.

Seals use many different materials. The quality and shape of the materials depend on the shape of the parts that must be sealed and the environment they are used in.

One seal material is high-sealability TEG.

The performance that is required of a seal

The performance that is required of a seal

The performance that is required of a seal varies widely, dependent on the condition of its use. For example, seals are expected to:

  • Prevent the permeation of fluids even in high-pressure or high-temperature conditions

  • Be flexible and elastic enough to adhere to adjacent components

  • Be stable enough to not significantly deform, distort, or otherwise deteriorate or damage equipment while in use.

Reasons to use TEG

Seal parts are intended to prevent liquids and gases from leaking to the outside of a machine or a device, and are thus expected to be airtight and resistant to extreme temperatures, pressures and chemicals.

Fields of use

Construction components (fire prevention sections such as plumbing pipes and window sashes)

Construction components

Reasons to use TEG

The Building Standards Act requires components that prevent the spread of fires to be placed in certain areas (fire prevention areas) on the assumption that a fire will occur.

The seal performance of expanding TEG for blocking flame is compliant with the Building Standards Act, which leads TEG to be extensively used in construction components.

Water supply and drainage pipes have conventionally been metallic. In recent years, TEG-based resin pipes have been an increasing share of the market as their workability is favorable due to their weight reduction and because they are lower cost.

FAQ

Can the amount of expansion, the ash content and other properties of TEG be changed on request?

They can be changed to some extent.
For more information, please contact our sales representative.

What does it look like?

It is a dark gray powder. We are able to provide a sample. If you would like to pick it up in your hands and see it up close, contact our sales representative.

Does it have an expiration date?

Basically, TEG will not deteriorate. But we recommend that you use it within the first six months.

Can we collaborate with you on research, establish a technical partnership or other similar activity?

Yes. Contact us so we can talk about it in detail.First, please contact our sales representative.
