What is thermally expandable graphite (TEG)?

TEG is AIR WATER’s original thermally expandable graphite made through an intercalation compound treatment of a natural, scale-like graphite using of our patented technology to add thermal expansion properties.

Rigorous quality control and the long-term stability of different properties are maintained by this product, based on the operational expertise we have accumulated over our 30-year history as the one and only manufacturer in Japan.

What is thermally expandable graphite (TEG)?
Principle of TEG

Principle of TEG

Generally, expansion occurs when TEG is heated to near 200 °C. The higher the temperature is,
the more evident the expansion becomes..

Heating the material decomposes and gasifies sulfuric acid and the other intercalation materials inserted between the layers.

Heating the material decomposes and gasifies sulfuric acid and the other intercalation materials inserted between the layers.

The pressure of the gasification expands each layer in the vertical direction of the hexagonal tabular crystals.

Feature Feature

Features of TEG

TEG Expansion illust
01 Expansion of a standard item starts at a temperate between 200 and 220 ℃. When heated, it expands about 200-fold.
For some grades of TEG, the temperature where it starts to expand is 260 ℃. These grades of TEG are suitable for applications with high molding temperature.
TEG compression-molded
02 Expanded TEG can easily be compression-molded without the use of a binder.
TEG flame retardant
03 When added to combustible substances such as rubber and resin, TEG serves as a flame retardant.
TEG can also be used in combination with phosphate ester or other non-halogen flame retardants.
TEG non-halogen
04 Being non-halogen, TEG does not emit chlorine gas or any other hazardous gases when combusted.
TEG ecologically
05 Manufactured in an ecologically sound way, TEG is also environmentally friendly and aligned with the SDGs.
